Pe 20 noiembrie 2013 era lansată versiunea 5.66 a player-ului Winamp, iar 5 zile mai târziu era lansată ultima versiune de Winamp a celor de la AOL/Nullsoft.
Versiunea 5.666 nu a făcut altceva decât să elimine serviciile AOL (OpenCandy, Emusic, AOL Search, și AOL Toolbar) din kitt-ul de instalare al player-ului.
Odată cu lansarea Winamp 5.66 pe 20 noiembrie 2013, AOL a anunțat că începând cu 20 decembrie 2013, site-ul Winamp.com va fi închis și player-ul nu va mai fi disponibil pentru download.
În spatele acestei decizii a stat vânzarea brand-ului Nullsoft către Radionomy, proprietarul unui post online de radio din Belgia.
Recent, o versiune beta a Winamp 5.8 a apărut pe Internet, așa că ieri, noul proprietar al Winamp.com a decis să publice noua versiune beta pe site-ul oficial, motivând că preferă c utilizatorii să descarce o variantă oficială testată și sigură pentru utilizare:
”A leaked version of Winamp 5.8 recently spread over the Internet. Consequently, we have decided to make this new version available to you, revised by us.
We therefore recommend that you download this version rather than any other as we guarantee it is safe for you to use.
This version is not an ongoing project but be sure that we are currently working hard on a future new Winamp.”
Dezvoltatorilor le-au trebuit aproape 5 ani să lanseze o nouă versiune Winamp, iar aceasta nu conține mari modificări:

De asemenea, noul proprietar a anunțat că anul viitor va lansa Winamp 6. Momentan nu se cunosc detalii despre ce va conține noua versiune.
Prima versiune de Winamp a fost lansată pe 21 aprilie 1997 și în scurt timp a avut peste 3 milioane de descărcări, ajungând în 2001 la peste 60 milioane de utilizatori.
